Dog Talk #381 (7/26/2014)

Dog Talk (and Kitties, Too!)

Dog Talk (7/26/2014) #381: Dr. Peter Li from Humane Society International describes his recent trip to bear witness to the “dog meat festival” in Yulin, China — which is not part of some ancient cultural Chinese tradition but a commercial enterprise only practiced since 2009, attracting many Chinese demonstrators opposed to this barbaric practice in which thousands of dogs are trucked in cruel conditions from around China (many of them stolen pets) and are butchered in a marketplace for human consumption. Peter was able to save and bring home two puppies, naming one Colby for himself and the other going to a board member of the Humane Society of the United States; young Owen calls from England to speak about his experience overcoming the psychological burdens of a rare crippling physical disorder he was born with, and how his life was transformed by adopting the Anatolian Shepherd dog, Haatchi, who was rescued by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals after he was tied to a train track and lost a leg being run over — a heartwarming validation of the human-animal bond described in the book Haatchi & Little B; Sarah Meyer-Patterson explains her work as a teacher at a Florida college for veterinary technicians, who are then licensed after 2 to 4 years of schooling (learn more at https://www.navta.net/).
